Planning shower niches with backer board: openings and cut lists

Plan niche openings, finished dimensions, board pieces and supporting details before ordering. Includes a practical cut-list and approval checklist.

Plan the finished niche and its support before calculating board pieces. A shower niche is more than a rectangular opening. Its lining, tile, bonding layers, perimeter and waterproofing connections all affect the finished space. An early cut list helps buyers avoid ordering from rough opening dimensions alone.

Use three sets of dimensions

Record the structural opening, the lined opening and the finished tiled opening separately. Name the reference plane for depth. This prevents a drawing intended to show clear storage space from being interpreted as the board cutting dimension.

For a simple hypothetical width check, a 400 mm rough opening with a combined lining-and-finish build-up of 20 mm on each side leaves 360 mm clear width. That calculation does not specify the board thickness or complete waterproofing assembly. Use the actual approved layers and include tolerances in the production drawing.

Make a piece schedule rather than ordering only area

Back liningFinished piece dimensions, board type and support
Side returnsLeft/right identity, depth reference and joint relationship
Top and baseDimensions and the designed base drainage detail
Surrounding wallBoard layout around the opening and supported edges
Sealing componentsCompatible corners, joints and connections required by the system

Do not add individual piece areas and assume that total can always be cut from the same area of full sheets. Shape, cutting allowance and usable offcuts determine the actual sheet count. Keep a drawing showing how parts fit within the purchased boards.

Resolve what is behind the lining

Coordinate framing, services and any required backing before boards conceal the opening. Ask the responsible designer to resolve whether the proposed location affects the surrounding wall construction. Do not cut structural members or relocate services based on a board layout.

The base geometry and waterproofing need an approved detail that directs water appropriately. A tile finish does not by itself establish waterproofing. Use the selected system's treatment for internal corners, edges and transitions, and identify who will inspect the work before it is covered.

Decide between board supply and a finished component

An enquiry for loose boards is different from an enquiry for a fabricated niche. State whether cutting, assembly, reinforcement and sealing are included in the requested supply. A material supplier's ability to quote boards does not establish that a ready-made, tested niche system is available.

For repeated bathroom layouts, assign each niche a type code and drawing revision. Count left- and right-handed variants separately if their details differ. When one dimension changes, update the relevant piece schedule rather than relying on a handwritten note attached to an old drawing.

Approval checklist

  • Location and rough opening checked against services and support.
  • Finished clear dimensions coordinated with the tile layout.
  • Board pieces identified with quantity, thickness and orientation.
  • Base, corners and wall transitions resolved by the chosen system.
  • Fabrication scope, sample and inspection responsibility agreed.
