BANARTAChoosing a tile backer board for a commercial floor starts with the proposed floor assembly and its loads, not a thickness label alone. A 20 mm board is not automatically suitable for every hotel, retail or other commercial installation.
Thickness and compressive strength are different specifications
Board thickness is measured in millimetres. Compressive strength or compressive stress is expressed in pressure units such as kPa. These values describe different properties and should be checked separately.
Read the test conditions alongside any strength figure. A value reported at a stated deformation must not be described as a load that causes no deformation. Ask for the current technical data for the specific board, rather than applying a generic XPS value to every product.
Information to confirm before specifying a floor
- Use and loading: describe pedestrian traffic, fixed equipment, concentrated loads and any wheeled traffic to the project designer.
- Support: identify the subfloor, its condition and the proposed fixing or bonding method.
- Finish: provide tile material, dimensions and adhesive requirements so compatibility can be reviewed.
- Build-up: confirm the available height, insulation requirements and whether a heating system is included.
- Product evidence: request the relevant board data, installation instructions and any applicable assembly test documentation.
Do not treat a backer board as the whole floor system
Review the board together with its supporting substrate, adhesive, finish and joint details. Do not infer approval for heavy rolling loads or structural use from board thickness or an isolated core-strength number. The selected assembly should be checked against the project requirements by its responsible designer.
For a wet area, obtain the specified treatment for joints, corners, penetrations and transitions. A moisture-resistant core is not, by itself, evidence that the installed assembly meets every waterproofing or vapour-control requirement.
Compare the relevant board options
Start with our cement-coated XPS boards and extruded polystyrene tile backer boards. Compare the specific surface, dimensions and supporting documentation rather than assuming all boards have the same specification.
