Both product families can appear in bathroom specifications, but the names do not describe a complete tiling or waterproofing system. A useful comparison starts with where the board sits, what supports it, and how the finished wall or floor will be sealed and tiled.
Understand the construction being offered
Banarta’s XPS Foam Tile Backer Board for Project Supply is described as an XPS core with fiberglass mesh and polymer-cement coatings on both faces. It should be compared with the exact cement-board product under consideration, using that manufacturer’s documentation. “Cement board” covers products with different constructions and instructions; do not assume every board has identical properties.
| Decision | What to check on both options |
|---|---|
| Handling | Weight of the required sheet size, cutting method and safe handling instructions |
| Support | Permitted substrate, framing or support conditions and fastening method |
| Wet-area detailing | The specified joint, corner, penetration and waterproofing system |
| Tile finish | Permitted tile loading, adhesive and floor/wall compatibility |
| Insulation | Whether insulation is needed here, and the declared data for the selected product |
| Overall cost | Board, accessories, covering layers, labour and transport |

Do not choose thickness in isolation
A board supported continuously on a suitable floor is a different case from a board spanning framing. Ask for the thickness and fixing instructions for the actual support arrangement. Include the tile and adhesive loads and any attached fixtures. Heavy fittings and special constructions need defined support; they should not be approved from a core compression figure.
Compare the complete wet-area system
Look for instructions covering joints, changes of plane, fasteners and pipe penetrations. The required materials must work together. For example, wedi’s own guidance treats sealing as a system-specific task; that does not make its components or approvals transferable to another brand.
Make a decision the installer can use
- Prepare one wall or floor section showing the intended substrate and finish.
- Obtain the proposed board reference and its matching installation information.
- List the sealing and fixing accessories in the comparison, not as later extras.
- Review handling and cutting with the installer, following the product safety instructions.
- Confirm the selected system can meet the project’s documentation requirements.
Where both options meet the assembly requirements, choose on the full installed scope and supply arrangements. Where an instruction or approval is missing, resolve it before treating the alternatives as equivalent.
