The middle of a board is only one part of a wet-area surface. Water-sensitive details often occur where boards meet, where the wall changes direction and where services pass through. Agree these details before tiling; they become harder to inspect once covered.
Begin with one compatible set of instructions
Identify the board, substrate, fixing or bonding method, sealing products and tile adhesive. Obtain instructions for that combination and the intended exposure. Avoid combining a board from one system with a joint detail copied from another unless compatibility has been confirmed. This guide sets out review points, not universal fixing centres, sealant widths or curing times.

Inspect the support before fixing
Confirm substrate condition, board support and the thickness specified for the application. Set out joints and openings so that the required edge support and fixing arrangement can be achieved. Do not rely on the tile layer to correct an unsupported board edge or a poorly prepared substrate.
Create a hold point before tiling
- Match the materials on site to the approved references.
- Check that joints, corners and service penetrations are accessible for treatment.
- Follow the specified preparation, coverage and curing requirements.
- Photograph completed details with location references before they are concealed.
- Complete any specified inspection or testing through the responsible installer or designer before releasing the area for tiling.
If a pipe is moved or a new fixing added after the sealing work, treat that as a detail requiring review and reinstatement. A completed earlier inspection does not automatically cover a later penetration.
What to send for a material discussion
Send the wall or floor section, board thickness, support arrangement and a sketch of unusual openings. Industry sealing guidance, such as wedi’s, also distinguishes the board from the treatment of its connections. Use the instructions applicable to the actual products selected; another brand’s tested system is not evidence for this installation.
