Custom panels are easier to purchase when the drawing, quotation and sample refer to the same construction. A sketch without dimensions or an email saying “same as the sample” can leave the hidden face, core, tolerances and edge details unresolved. Use a controlled panel schedule from the start.
Define the complete construction

Do not make every dimension a tight tolerance by default. Identify what is necessary for interfaces and fit, then confirm what can be supplied. A tolerance should be measurable using an agreed method, rather than a vague request for “perfect accuracy”.
Compare quotations line by line
Ask each offer to state its construction, price basis, packing scope, delivery basis and exceptions. If an alternative facing or core is proposed, record it as an alternative for review. Do not silently compare it as though it were the original specification.
Approve the first piece for the right reasons
For a custom or repeat programme, discuss a first-piece or representative sample approval. Check geometry, orientation, edge treatment and surface appearance against the drawing. Identify which characteristics require test evidence separately. A successful visual inspection does not establish fire performance, load capacity or suitability for an enclosure.
Control changes after approval
- Issue the revised drawing and identify the changed dimensions or construction.
- Ask for the cost, timing and technical effect before accepting the change.
- Confirm which revision applies to work not yet produced.
- Keep the approved sample reference and revised specification together.
- State how panel IDs and orientation should be marked for unpacking and installation.
Packing should protect the finished surfaces and edges while allowing the receiving team to identify parts. Discuss bundle sequence where installation order matters.
