Choose an adhesive for the actual two surfaces being joined. “Suitable for foam” does not automatically mean suitable for a PVC-faced, FRP-faced or metal-faced XPS sandwich panel. A bond to an outer skin is a different interface from a bond directly to exposed XPS core.
Identify the interface first
State whether the task is panel manufacture, bonding a finished panel to a frame, sealing an edge or attaching another component. These operations can have different requirements. Identify the material, coating and surface finish on both sides of the joint, together with any protective film that must be handled according to instructions.
| Interface | Information needed |
|---|---|
| Exposed XPS to another material | Foam compatibility and the condition of the other surface |
| Panel skin to frame | Skin finish, frame coating, joint geometry and load |
| Panel edge or joint seal | Movement, exposure and sealing function |
| Factory skin-to-core bond | Controlled process and evidence for the finished construction |
A sealant selected for closing a gap must not be treated as a structural adhesive unless its documented use and the joint design support that role. Likewise, an adhesive that can attach insulation to a porous wall is not necessarily a laminating adhesive for two non-porous skins.
Review restrictions before planning a trial
Obtain the current technical and safety documents for the exact adhesive variant and region. Ask the adhesive supplier to confirm both substrates, any required preparation, curing conditions and the intended service environment. Read exclusions as carefully as the compatibility list.
Some products restrict non-porous surfaces, filmed facings, moisture exposure or particular service conditions. These are product-specific limits. Do not infer compatibility from a generic chemical family, the word “construction” on a cartridge or another user's experience with a different foam panel.
Make the sample trial traceable
- Record the panel construction, skin finish and sample batch.
- Record the adhesive identity, batch and document revision.
- Use the preparation, application and curing procedure specified for the trial.
- Record environmental conditions and when observations or tests are made.
- Agree the acceptance method and relevant service exposures in advance.
- Keep photographs and identify the location and character of any failure.
An initial hand check can reveal an obvious incompatibility but cannot establish long-term performance. Do not set a universal pull-off target or curing time from this article. Where the joint carries load or has a demanding service role, the responsible technical parties must define suitable validation.
Send a panel enquiry that identifies both bonding surfaces
First use the core and facing specification guide to describe the panel. In the enquiry, identify the exposed surface to be bonded and the other substrate, then attach the joint drawing and proposed adhesive documentation. A facing name alone may omit a coating or film that matters to the review.
Discuss the panel configuration with Banarta, including dimensions, quantity, destination and samples needed for evaluation. Obtain adhesive compatibility and trial conditions from the adhesive supplier; a panel quote is not approval of the bond.
Control changes after approval
A different skin supplier, coating, primer or adhesive variant can change the interface. Record these changes and ask whether the previous trial still applies. Purchasing should retain the approved material combination, rather than ordering only by a broad label such as “XPS panel glue”.
Discuss the construction before ordering
Use Banarta sandwich panel options and the joint and fixing coordination guide. Send the intended interface, service conditions and drawing. Adhesive availability or approval for a particular joint is not implied by a panel quotation.
Example of why restrictions matter
The 2018 Henkel PL 300 technical sheet lists foam applications alongside restrictions on non-porous and filmed surfaces. This is an illustration of document review, not a current adhesive recommendation or approval for Banarta panels. Obtain current documentation for the proposed product.
