Shiplap or square-edge XPS: coverage and ordering checks

Specify XPS edge profiles clearly and compare usable coverage, cut edges and pack quantities before ordering square-edge or shiplap boards.

Order the edge profile and usable coverage, not just a nominal board size. Square-edge boards meet at a butt joint. Shiplap boards have a stepped edge that overlaps the neighbouring board. Tongue-and-groove is another profile and should not be used as a substitute name for shiplap.

Describe the profile on all four edges

An offer may describe a treatment on the long edges only, or on every edge. Ask for an edge sketch with dimensions and a photograph of the actual sample. Mark which side faces up where the profile or surface is directional. A vague “interlocking” description is insufficient for checking whether two deliveries will join.

Compare price using usable area

Consider a hypothetical offer: one board has an overall area of 0.75 m² but covers 0.72 m² after its edges engage. At an example price of $4.50 per board, cost per usable square metre is $4.50 ÷ 0.72 = $6.25. Dividing by the overall area would give $6.00 and understate the comparison cost.

The dimensions and price are illustrative, not a Banarta offer. Use the supplier's confirmed effective coverage for the selected profile. When a catalogue already states effective coverage, do not subtract the overlap a second time.

Plan the boundary pieces

Cutting a profiled board creates a new edge that may no longer have the original overlap. A layout therefore needs both repeating full boards and the perimeter cuts. Check corners, penetrations, changes of direction and the last row against the project detail. Do not assume offcuts can be rotated and used in every position.

The edge form alone does not establish airtightness, waterproofing or structural load transfer. Those depend on the complete assembly and its specified details. A stepped joint should not be treated as permission to omit a required membrane, sealing measure or support.

Approve a joining sample before a mixed order

  1. Identify the exact grade, thickness and edge drawing for each order line.
  2. Check how representative boards fit together without forcing them.
  3. Record any gaps, damage or dimensional differences against agreed tolerances.
  4. Keep a labelled accepted sample and the matching drawing revision.
  5. Require written confirmation before substituting profiles or combining batches.

For repeat purchases, add the edge drawing number to the purchase order. This is more reliable than relying on a photograph from an old email. Receiving staff can then compare the delivery label and visible profile with the same approved record.

Send a complete board schedule

Start with Banarta's insulation range and the bulk-order RFQ guide. Specify the required profile as a request; availability and effective dimensions must be confirmed for the quoted configuration. Send your edge sketch and quantity schedule.

DuPont's Plazamate XR installation guide distinguishes effective surface areas for its edge options. It illustrates why the area basis matters, without establishing dimensions or availability for Banarta products.
